I have a TC PA hunter with a .50 smooth barrel that I bought on this forum. It's a good gun that shoots well -- as good as any of my rifles, in fact. But I'd like to get a separate smoothbore that would be more appropriate to use as a single-barrel shotgun for wing shooting. If I can locate an old, used barrel, what is the largest caliber/gauge that I could get out of it? Could it go as high as 12 ga? Or would it be more like a 28?

I recall that the New Englander fits the bill pretty close as an "off the shelf" solution. But I'd much rather keep the .50 smooth and add a shotgun than get a shotgun with another rifled barrel.

I doubt that anyone reputable would try to make a 12 gauge out of a Pennsylvania Hunter barrel. It would seem that you could, but if you take into account the depth of all the holes that get drilled in it to attach the underlug and sight, it's only gonna be a 28 or 24 gauge. Ask Mr. Hoyt in April when he is taking orders again.

Better option would be to look for a T/C New Englander in 12 gauge from the factory.
