Looking at old strikers from way back I noticed a lot of blacksmith made them different styles and shapes. Some are down right fancy dancy. I wonder if it was because they just wanted to show off their skill on the anvil. ? Or they just got bored. Anyhow I forged this snake style striker yesterday. I was bored 😊

I would buy this just for the joy of repeatedly hitting it with a sharp flint to take out my hate for snakes.

Maybe a combination of skilled and bored. I watched an experienced blacksmith once. It was amazing how quickly he could do his work. He said, "the right metal for the job makes all the difference. After that, it's partly skill, patience, and a lot of luck"

Just wanting to show off their skill I think 😉
And it was a time of fancy. Lace on hats, gingerbread on ships ect.
Models of ships used to be made for the yards. Many of these still exist. Modren spy scopes have looked down the hatches in the lower decks. They found all the pillers and decking and knees all finished even though never to be seen.
It was just a decorative time.
