Actually that's a really good point, of all axe work splitting wood is about as hazardous as it gets. A slight miss and the axe can glance off and hit a foot. Maybe the best thing is some other type of ax work to get in some experience.
 
It is dangerous work that requires a lot of teaching and supervision. Start him out on easily split wood in short lengths. Something like dry oak in 1 to 1 1/2 foot lengths that will split nicely. Avoid anything that is stringy or has knots in it. That stuff is hard to split, requires more of a hard swing to get the ax to go into the wood and split it. Swinging too hard at hard to split wood can be dangerous to anyone. It is dangerous work and will require a lot of supervision and training before turning him loose to split wood for the camp. When I worked in a hospital, I saw what an adz could do to a foot. It ain't pretty.
