Way back in the 83 or 84 I built an 1863 Springfield from a kit to use for Civil War reenacting. I worked on it at my friends house in his dads workshop and we removed the lock markings and re-stamped them with out initials. I remember filing some but I also seem to remember using a punch and peening the markings. I have Brown Bess musket that I want do something similar to and was wondering if that's how I should do it? My Friend can't remember either. LOL I guess we sort of Defarbed it and then Re farbed it so to speak.
The only issue I think I might have is the Bess lock is considerably thinner.
Should I use a punch of some sort or just tap the markings with a small ball peen hammer?
