When the ferrule metal is shaped around a shaft of the desired size and brought back together it forms a skirt below the ferrule. (not sure if skirt is correct name) The bottom inside of the ferrule is then soldered where the two ends meet. My question: Is the skirt below the ferrel then trimmed in size front and rear, leaving a mid section? You only really need enough metal to make it strong enough for a pin. My question: How were the originals made?
