I use a liquid bluing agent, Oxyblu (Sp.?) I get from Brownells. Probably any of them will work. It will wear off with time but it lasts pretty long and re application is simple.

Why not plate the result in brass? There are a few tutorials on youtube, but I haven't tried this type of plating. I am doing nickel with some pretty decent success so far.
