Is yours the 45 or 50 caliber?

It will probably shoot pretty straight with a load of 65 to 80 grains of 3fg black powder sending a ball of 0.005" under bore diameter wrapped in a lubricated cotton patch of 0.017" thickness to the target.

You will have to find the best load for your rifle

It’s a .50 with fast twist for conicals. Is 1:24 ROT.

Bought the rifle from the classified’s here on the forum. Was an extremely good price that I couldn’t pass up.

Anyway, I’m thinking I’ll start with a .490 ball with a .018 pillow ticking patch. I personally use spit patches. Gonna use a light load of 50 grain’s of Goex 3f. Don’t want to strip past the fast twist rifling.

That’ll be my starting load and will adjust accordingly.

All my other muzzleloader’s are dedicated roundball barrel’s with the exception of several of my civil war rifle’s.

Plan on shooting this Ped MR Hawken with RB out to 50 yards or so? Then beyond that I’ll switch to conicals 100 yards and beyond.

Anyway, that’s my plan? Unfortunately its been raining cats and dogs around here for the last several weeks about everyday.

Now I’m rambling on so I’ll stop.

Respectfully, Cowboy

That fast rate of twist may work better with the lighter charge. It is also important to consider the depth of the groove. Deep grooves allow for a thicker patch to hold the ball and more powder may be used. Some of the early Jaeger rifles had high rates of twist such as 1 turn in the length of the 28 inch barrel. They were effective round ball shooters with their deep grooves. The Dixie Jaeger has a fast twist barrel in a modern production gun. It is known to be effective with round balls.

With any new (to you) rifle its all about load development.

Yep, I totally agree!

With a deeper groove depth the PB combo will definitely grip better along with a lighter charge.

Also agree that every muzzleloader has its own personality as well! Will have to get it out to the range and work up a proper load combo for this one.

Respectfully, Cowboy
