G’day gents.

Well thus being my first initial foray into the world of Black Powder (I’m not new to hunting, rifles etc) and I picked up this gun from a fella down south and is currently being shipped to me.

I can’t seem to find much infomation online about the company or this particular gun but I spoke at length to the previous owner who had two of the same guns and sold this one as he had way to many rifles and was cleaning out the gun safe.

I plan to hunt with this gun asap when I sort some loads for it and I’d be happy to take on any loading tips, powder types etc any of you lads might have, more so and of the fellow Aussie guys on here. It seems the powders - from what I’ve seen - tend to be less in the varieties on offer Here in Australia then what you fellas have over the pond in the US.

Cheers,

AK.

Date code looks to be 1979 mfg. Stock looks like Sapele mahogany. Nice side plate and patch box.

.45 caliber is a plus. Fine looking rifle.

I would start with 50 grains of 3f and see how she shoots. Being percussion, you can get away with BP substitutes. More powder almost never equals more accuracy. Trial and error with ball and patch size will let you know what she likes.

Good purchase.

Roger, thanks for that. What’s a good ball size to test if I was going to grab a couple of different sizes to test on the range?

For initial testing with your 45 caliber gun I would start with a .440” diameter ball and have various patch material from .010” to .020” available. .010” will likely load easily, but may not give the best accuracy, but will get you started. As you approach.020” thick patch material loading will become difficult, but accuracy may improve. I find it easier to use a ball I know will work and vary patch thickness with a new gun to start. You will not know until you try different combinations at the range what may work best.

Nice looking gun.
