Divided up my father-in-laws guns this morning. My brother-in-law picked this one. It's tremendously heavy, huge caliber and huge octagonal smooth bore.
Looks like the lock is stamped 1838. I'm guessing the stock is not original. looks like someone may have just turned it into a conversation piece. I'd love to
know what it was and what is was used for.

It was used on an expedition against the Loch Ness monster with a bore like that! I think it’s just a put together parts gun. But that barrel is worth something to someone! The lock is a converted flintlock, US musket I guess, I’m not up on those.
