Need advice preparing the Brass on the CVA Re-do

I am re-doing an old CVA Colonial Pistol. The Brass on the Pushrod is pinned and when it was originally stained and finished, there was Stain and Polyurethane left on the Brass at each end. Is there any good method to remove the stain and finish from the Brass without removing it from the wood???

Tape the wood and sand then polish the brass. Remove the tape then wax it.

What Phil said but much easier if you remove it to work on it. Not hard.
