I know it’s tempting to just excavate a huge hole for the lock internals, but try to leave as much wood as possible for a good bearing surface for the lock plate.
 
It was pre-inlet. I believe the kit came from Pecatonica. I can see what you are saying about the gap. Not sure why it was squared off on the lock side. It wasn’t on the other side. Now this kit was given to me by my sister. Her husband passed last year. He may have done it. I don’t know. But it is what it is now.

The gap there , or lack of one , is all dependant on the breech plug length inside the barrel . Yours is already done so is what it is but not n mine I'll mark the breech face and projected Touch hole location and then set the lock.n there , mark it and start sinking the lock ... Yep , you have to drill the #2 lock screw through the bolster of the breech plug . Best of luck !
