We call them mountain chickens, they are plentiful here, and better than chicken!
 
We used to have ruffed grouse all over where I live. In the spring one would always hear drumming and in the fall would kick them up frequently or even just see them sitting on limbs. Now they seem to be all but gone....but then all of our game populations here seem to be in rapid decline.
 
We call ruffed grouse "fool birds" because they are dumber than heck. I've killed several with just rocks 🤣. It's cool you actually hunt them with dogs. We find them while driving to and from our hunting spots and they are easy pickings
