I wasn't familiar with him, I do recognize the name from the Foxfire books. Loved those. Looks like I missed out bigtime. RIP sir
Wow, end of an era. He was one of the fellows that kept muzzleloading alive as TV eventually ignited an interest in them in the mid 1960's, and I first read about him in Foxfire V when it came out in 1979.

I think Smiths Funeral Home in Morgantown, Kentucky is taking care of arrangements. Here tell about this spring his ashes being spread on the Green River which is where Woodbury is located and he called home.

God bless Hershel and his family. GREAT MAN!
Hershel inspired thousands of people to get involved in muzzle loading in one of the many threads of our vocation. His soul will be teaching still.

Heshel is a legend and will not be forgetten but will be missed. I have never met him but my friends have and have learned from him at his sessions.
Sorry for your loss of a close & great friend.
Rest in peace, Hershel.
He was a true legend. I always wanted a rifle by him!
