I have been shooting tripple seven in my pistol and rifle and its dead easy to clean the barrel but I get a really tough varnish build up around the nipple. any tricks to clean that off?
Thanks

I take nipples' off first thing and soak in Hoppes Black Powder Solvent and Patch Lube. They are the LAST thing I clean and after a soaking while I clean the rest a tooth brush and hot water gets them shiny again lickidy split.

I drop the nipple in my pot of hot soapy water and then get after the mess around the tipple hole on my barrel with a toothbrush and hot soapy water. With pyrodex and real PB it cleans up no problem. With tripple 7 i get a bulletproof shiny layer on the barrel that is almost like glass. soaking it dosent seem to do anything. toothbrush is nada. Only think that seems to work is a razor blade and brass brush which has obvious downsides.

The "varnish" is most likely a mix of oils and fouling that blow back on firing. Soap, water and a stiff toothbrush are the best cleaning tools.

If cleaning between shots, avoid very wet patches. A dry patch can't remove all the moisture, especially if the rifle has a chambered breech.

I use 0000 steel wool to buff out the nipple. I also sometimes use a very small flat screwdriver, those little mini kind, like for eye glasses to scrape the crud off.
