Previous to picking up my .50 cal flinter,my only black powder adventures (and they sure as hell ARE adventures)was a cap and ball 1858 rem.navy pistol. So much for my expertise. Was having a little trouble in the RAIN FORESTS of the west coast, this past winter, so i tried a 1/2 inch cardboard wad on top of my 55 to 70 grains of fffg target load. worked great (NO WET MAIN CHARGES , bot the patch literally got burnt up and burnt thru the cotton patch.(STILL ACCURATE). stopped using the wad and no more burnt patches. only my 2 cents worth. OLD CROW :hmm:

did you lube the cardboard wad before putting it down on the powder? The lube is generally what keeps the patch from burning, whether you use a cardboard, fiber, for fabric filler between the powder and the PRB.

Happy Birthday Paul.

I have enjoyed all your posts, keep it up and have a great day.
