We have had near record snow in the month of May and all this week I was trying to cope with an ugly vertigo attack. Have been doing physical therapy for a frozen shoulder as well. It has been since September since I got to shoot my percussion guns. The stars finally aligned today. I am itching to try out the new-to-me Zouave I picked up over the winter, but I figured I would start with a known quantity in my Green Mountain barreled TC Hawken with 50 cal round balls and 70 grain charges of Black MZ. Yeah, I know, not real black but it shoots very well and as a less energetic powder I knew it would help cut down on recoil which I wasn't sure a banged up shoulder could handle. Beautiful day, no snow on the ground in my favorite spot in the forest, the rifle shot really well, and saw three or four herds of mulie does as I went to and fro. It never ceases to amaze me how everything that bothers me drops away for a few hours while I concentrate solely on loading and shooting.
I used a recoil pad to hedge my bets, and the rifle didn't bother me at all. I may have to get the Zouave out next time.
