Primitive or not, I’d like to see what you guys carry your birdshot in for your fowlers. I made a few ball bags awhile back out of some scrap buckskin, but just don’t see it containing #5-8 birdshot all that well. I’m going to tinker with some paper ‘cartridges’ made of brown grocery sacks in the mean time.

I use ball bags mostly for shot... however I’ve been thinking about making a shot snake...

One needs a spout to direct the shot from the pouch to the measure. Essentially a wooden, bone or horn tube that is tightly bound to the mouth of the pouch. Too large a tube or tube tip can be unwieldy. Taper the spout to be compatible with the measure.

I'm in the process of building a set of Shot Horns for myself and my dad...once completed I'll post the final results of my efforts.

I currently use old CVA shot bag with an Irish Spout.
I have actually thought about a ‘shot horn’, but wouldn’t it be fairly loud with the shot moving around (assuming you’re talking about a small powder horn, just for shot)?

I carry shot in an old hand-blown medicine bottle (about four inches tall). No rattle. I also have one (or two or three) of Cutfinger's hard-sided ball bags; just shot, two sided with shot and balls, and one with a stoppered spout. Carried in my bag with a tin of wads (ten of each, three types: over powder nitro card, cushion, and over shot.) With ten pre-measured powder charges or my powder horn with measure, I have all I need.

Skinny one at the bottom holds some loose shot. I hate monkeying with measuring and pouring loose shot while hunting so I don't use this option often.

Same with this one which is probably the 1st leather accoutrement I made. Shot measure fits securely to leather wrap on plug. Never gets used. Was actually "lost" (didn't realize it was missing until I came across it recently) for a while.

Pre-measured shot loads in cane/bamboo tubes. Used this for quite a while.
Then I worked out a way to make these consistantly and repeatably,

I make 2 sizes, one size/shot charge for squirrels and small game/pheasants and a second heavier charge for turkey.

Working on a different method of premade paper cartridges that will mimic the ones I used to form at the muzzle. Hoping these will work better with the Skychief load.

Assuming you cut off the ends once placed in the barrel? I was actually going to try the skychief load myself

You're half right. The flat folded end remains closed and sits on my wadding, the twisted end is torn/cut off when even with the muzzle and then overshot card is applied.
I have a picture tutorial on making and using these. It is a sticky in the hunting or smoothbore section. I also have a pic tutorial of loading the Skychief load here somewhere.

Not primitive at all but I find aluminum beer bottles work well enough for #6. The narrow mouth michelob/bud light ones easier to pour than the wide mouth coors/miller. Just throw it in the possibles bag, haven't really noticed it being too noisy.

The one on the right came with my .62 trade gun (Pedersoli) when I bought her off a fella. I’m not positive, but I think it’s #6 birdshot.
Top left I made a few years ago. Braintanned the deerskin and carved the spout and plug by hand using a knife, an awl, and a broken spoon bit. #7 birdshot.
Middle is a commercial piece a friend gave me; I carry 00 buckshot in there. The bottom one I made last year and use it for my .600 roundballs. Both are wet-formed veg tan, and I carved the plug for the bottom one. Working on turning spouts and plugs, now that I have my springpole lathe up and running, so hopefully I’ll have a few more to show before long.

I STARTED WITH BROWN KRAFT, store paper bags, 70+YRS AGO and I am still using them, both for cartridges & wadding in DBL'S & in smooth bore muskets.
