I have a NIB Armsport steel frame 1858 Remington New Army .44 that my Dad bought, probably in the late 70s or early 80s. It’s a Model 5018.

I’ve done some searching on Google and haven’t come up with much information on it.

I did have somebody tell me that is was made in 1977 based on the markings, and they thought it was made by Armi San Paolo.

Can anybody help me out with more info, or confirm the information I was given?

One of the interesting things about this gun is the top of the barrel is actually marked “1859 NEW ARMY 44 CALIBER”

I’m assuming that was just a factory typo?

I’d like to find a second one of those so I can have a pair to shoot with if anybody has a lead on one. I know the aren’t the best…. The fit and finish doesn’t seem great… but I’m keeping Dads, so I might as well have another to match it.

Why are you set on another 1858 copy from Armsport? Just curious, jut to match your Dads old gun? I believe they went out of business many, many years ago. So your options of finding "that" brand gun are reduced to secondary resale market or gun auctions. May be a long wait but if patient ya never know when one might pop up. But there are plenty of current 1858 copies made today that would give you a shooting pair.

Yeah, I’m kind of anal retentive about matching guns. I’d love to find and Armsport, but I’d settle for one from the same factory and a different importer.

That said, I just acquired these (also from my Dad… isn’t he the best?) so I can afford to be patient and finding the second pistol.

Grips don’t match. Probably should sell one… ;-)

Is your dad adopting?
Best part is they don’t look like they’ve ever been fired. No noticeable wear, bright bores. He didn’t buy them new, but he doesn’t really remember the history since he got them about 20 years ago. Now I just need somebody to take me to school on cap and ball pistols.

You’re in the right place. No shortage of teachers with strong opinions! 😎
Those Rugers are excellent beginners guns. Should be very serviceable right out of the box and they’re gonna rival your modern guns for accuracy too. Easy to feed, black powder, 30 grains or so of 3f, top it with a wool wad, 457 round ball, and light it with any #11 percussion cap.
