I have a bullet mold in .575, has anybody been able to stuff a .575 ball in there barrel? The thinnest patches I could find were .10 and I still need one hell of a hammer to force in in

Go to a .570 ball, or a .562. I have no trouble with .575 balls and .015 lubed patches in my Bobby Hoyt barrels, but I had to use a .010 patch with the .575 balls in a T/C Big Boar.

In Colerain .58 , have had good success w/.562 , and .014 patch. Finished a longrifle with this setup last fall. Powerful tack driver , good accuracy. The owner wanted a tang peep sight. Even this old guy could shoot it.

I'm in the smaller ball with a thicker patch. You get a better fill of the grooves to minimize gas blowby and more patch to minimize the cutting of the patch by the lands.

I would guess .575 moulds exist for people who had original .58 rifle-muskets with worn or oversized bores, or for .58's that had been bored smooth. There really is no reason to use them. I had a T/C Big Boar years ago and I remember it shooting fine with the Speer .570 balls and .015 patches , back then you could buy .570 balls at any sporting goods store.

In my Zouave I have had good success with a .562 ball and .018 ticking patch or a .570 ball with .010 patch. .575 ball is a no go.

Is that a 575 "bullet" or a 575 "ball". They are different.

If that's a "bullet" you don't use a patch. Just lube the bullet. If it's a .575" ball, forget it. Get some .570" or .562" balls. One of my 58's likes a .562" ball with a .015" mink oil lubed patch. The other likes a .570" ball with a .018" mink oil lubed patch. Let the experiment begin!

The T/C Big Boar has a 1:48" twist with shallow rifling grooves. I found that a .570 ball in .015 mink oil lubed patch worked well with 90 grains of 2f or less. If I tried to push it to 100 grains or more, the accuracy fell way off such that it was impractical for deer hunting much beyond 30 yards.

Lyman has a .570 ball mold. I also had to experiment having a .562, .570 and .575.
