A New surprise issue for an old flint shooter

An old friend, Cayugad, RIP, showed me a little trick to knap your flint. Take a #10 common nail, cut off the point and file a little notch on the end. Then placing it along the edge of the flint strike it with your short starter. Works great. I keep it in my field tool bag.

Since I was a kid, I wipe the frizzen with my thumb and then top and bottom of the flint. Yes, I wrote my thumb on my pants.

I had some joker go on, on another forum, about how you can’t do that as oils from yer hands blah blah blah. He said you need a plastic squeeze bottle of alkiehol to clean it. I asked if they had squeeze bottles of that, back then. Guess what, your thumb will work fine.

i do the same thing. but cleaning the blood off adds another step.
