Thinking about getting a .40 GM interchangable barrel for my TC Hawken. They come in 32" and in 38". Any real advantage to the longer one?

Any real advantage to the longer one? IMO, NO.

From the longer one you will get a longer sight radius and somewhat higher velocity.

The shorter will not be near as heavy or ungainly.

Assuming a 15/16" or 1" barrel on a TC, I say it is a no brainer going for the shorter barrel unless you are building a dedicated target rifle.

Not only is the longer barrel heavier it won't look as clean on the TC as does the standard 32"....but that part is just an opinion.

Enjoy, J.D.

I have a 28" and a 38" for the Renegades.
The 28" is about right for carry.
The 38" is a solid hunch of iron and may become a slightly larger bore with fast twist.

I passed on the 38" for fear it would simply be way too heavy and glad I did...the 32" was plenty hefty enough and a proverbial tack driver.

I did the 32 .40 barrel after holding someones that was sporting the 38 incher...No thank you!
The 32 is plenty heavy in its own right.

Very wise passing on the 38 incher. I bought the 38 inch version recently and am considering selling it. Although very accurate, I bought it for off hand shooting if you dont shoot within 3 seconds you start shaking from the weight LOL. If I dont sell it, I'll cut the barrel off or rebore to a larger caliber. The 38 inch would make a dandy bench gun for sure

Man, you could get Bobby Hoyt to bore that out to a .54cal smoothbore and you have a sweet 38" small game smoothbore for shot loads, as well as outstanding PRB accuracy for deer...and of course, that excess dead weight out front would be gone.
I've seen others here post that his rebore job costs $60.

From .40 to too much larger becomes a very time consuming and therefore expensive proposition. I'm thinking .458" bore.

Could be, I know nothing about the process...figured it would get mounted on a piece of high tech machinery, some numbers get dialed into a computer, and go have lunch...LOL...worth a call to Bobby to find out though.

I'd bet a .45cal would still be too heavy, but it should at least make an outstanding .50cal if boring it out to a .54cal(.28ga) is not feasible.
But as hard as good drop in barrels are to come by for the T/C Hawken now, I'd figure out something good to do with it.

Makes me wonder if anyone uses long barrels to make a rifle and pistol that use the same patch and ball.

1 vote for 32"...these shoot straight!
40 yds benched....1" squares

I did this with a 42 inch Rayl barrel in .36 cal. I wanted a 32 inch for a Seneca and used the rest of the barrel on a pistol. I bought a breech plug from TOW and fitted it to a Patriot. It is more accurate than the factory 45 barrel.

If you want GM start looking now. GM has dropped the ml line. When they are gone, they are gone.
