This week I received a LH flint .54 "Gemmer Hawken" from muzzle-loaders.com. It replaces the LH flint .54 Lyman Great Plains Rifle that I used to have but foolishly sold off years ago. Anyway, the Investarm rifles made today are not as nice as those made even 10 years ago, much less my GPR from the 1990s. In particular, the triggers were horrendous. Difficult to set and so heavy when unset as to be unusable. So, I ordered a Davis Deerslayer from the Log Cabin Shop and it arrived today.

Installation was painless and while the instructions mention removing wood, that wasn't required. (It may be required on a T/C.) The rifle now has an easy to set trigger that would be usable even when unset.

Pic before installing the new triggers:

Yesterday I added a couple coats of clear Watco Danish Oil to the stock, and I also replaced the vent liner with an RMC unit that uses an Allen wrench for removal.

The lock sparks well even with the cut agate flint that it came with.

The only other modification I have planned it to put slots in the barrel keys and install pins held in by the escutcheons so they can't fall out and get lost.

Made a short starter for my granddaughter’s shooting kit. Built it a bit smaller so it will fit her hand better.
That’s nice, never thought of using an antler piece , could make a nice hammer too, love people that make things. Think I am getting somewhere with my cape rifle , seems Araldite epoxy is holding the 3 pieces stock together . Then today scraped and sanded and painted with acrylic and rubbed down some more, it will be a good wall hanger or over the fireplace. This 12g cape rifle has taken hours, but for £170 at auction I cannot complain, still hours of work to do , 31” long barrels

started punching out caps - tomorrow I will fill them with bang juice!

Read about using mixture of Acetone and a single base smokeless powder to set the mixture in the caps. Has anyone here tried this and had good results?
I want to start doing this myself... have all the stuff, just not sure if I'm able to fill the caps due to having tremors.... please post pics of the filling process.... thnxs

Also made a bunch of caps today, as well as 100 paper cartridges for the '63 Sharps. And got a batch of "antique muzzleloader propellant" running in the mill.
RRidgely52, I finally figured out if I put the empty caps in one of the little trays that CCI SP primers come in they are easy to fill. Then I tamp them and pick them out with a shishkebob skewer. It makes life way easier.

8F and snowing today, rang a few steel targets at the range until my fingers started to seize up, then went for a woods walk.

The range, good to see snow!! It's been too dry.

My camp site at the range, no bear tracks anywhere today, maybe finally went to sleep.

As per my new year resolution, more outdoors & less indoors. :)
