Hello in camp has any one else used a set screws for a touch hole liners? I use a stainless steel set screw with a dimpled end and a Allen head. I use the dimpled end to align my drill bit to cone the inside. I file the Allen side down to where the Allen wrench just has enough to grip. Then I file the backside for length and drill flash hole 1/16. The question I have is that when installing it in the barrel there is no shoulder on the set screw to but up against the barrel, I have been using blue loctite on the threads with no problems to keep it from working it's way into the barrel. Is this a good idea or not?
 
Using blue Loc-Tite seems to me to be a good idea.

Vent liners don't need to be removed unless they are worn out and it takes thousands of shots to do that.
Because you are using the medium strength blue thread locking compound instead of the permanent red type, if you ever do want to remove the liner it won't be easy but it can be done.
 
Using a through type tap (tapered) you could gradually go deeper with the tap, trying fit as you go, until the threads tighten and the liner stops where you want it.

Never did this. Just thinking.
 
Are you developing a problem to over come? For just a few bucks you can have a touch hole liner that has proven its self.

or for a few bucks just buy an allen drive liner from OX-YOKE, ready to install......
 
Hi, flinter. Like you. I enjoy making the things that I use while enjoying our hobby. I think it's fun to make some of the bits and pieces that we use to make smoke. Yeah, I could purchase them but I like to tinker. And right now, at this point in time, there's ample time to do so. Have fun.
 
Nothing wrong with a set screw vent liner. Personally I just don't like to see the big hole in the side of the barrel. Because I never remove my liners to clean, I don't need the ability to remove it.
 
I have OX-yoke liners in all my rifles. Through trial and error I have less touch hole fouling and flash in pans with them than any other. I remove them every time I clean and use some anti seize on the threads. The flat screw slots on others seem to collect too much fouling. The Ox-yoke liners are like $5-7 and free shipping on eBay. I have near instantaneous ignition too.

I just bought a touch hole liner for my new Pedersoli Pennsylvania rifle for $4.95. Probably won't ever need it cause I only go to the range once per week and fire off 15 - 30 shots. Got the liner just for peace of mind same as why I have several nipples for my Lyman Great Plains rifle percussion.
