Before purchasing a Lyman black powder handbook & loading manual and I would like to know if either past or present editions contains any thing to do with the Ruger Old Army and the Uberti Remington 1858. Also, if any discussion on substitute black powders such as 777, Pyrodex, American Pioneer powders, etc. I would appreciate if you would let me know if any of these subjects appear in an edition of the manual. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Generally any bp substitute will work.
May be some minor differences but regardless of which used always start a low end. I've been using Pyrodex P over 20 years and it work just fine for me. I can get it locally so it's my goto. Like any powder treat it as corrosive and clean asap. My 58s I pull the grips and put it in a sink with hot soapy water and let it soak at least 10 minutes. Other guns I use soapy water soaked patches and scrub till clean. Once guns clean and dry light oil.
As far as load, my 58s shoot real accurate with 25gns. You can use 18- to however much keeps the projectile flush or hair low of cylinder face. Every gun eats different. On 44cal I would start at 22 then adjust up till accuracy drops then fall back. Or what shoot accurate and is comfortable to shoot.
The old army should be same.

Yes, the book has 2 pages of information about loads for the Ruger Old Army .45. (pp 287, 288)

Almost all of the tests include Pyrodex. Whether it is the P, RS, or Select depends on which gun barrel was being tested.

There are a few tests that use GOEX Clear Shot but I don't see anything with 777, American Pioneer or other similar powders.
