I picked up a tc hawken in 50 cal as my first muzzleloader. This may be a very naive question, but is it possible the put a new barrel on it and switch calibers? I am thinking of the drop in green mountain barrels at track of the wolf.

Simple answer, yes. If you are looking at the Green Mountain IBS barrel to fit the TC Hawken in 15/16”.
That is if your TC Hawken also has a 15/16” barrel. As I understand some were sold with 1” barrels.

It’s done every day. Just have to know the barrel size, either 1” or 15/16” accross the flats. May require very minor fitting between breech hook and tang, and between under barrel lug and key.

50 caliber T/C Hawkens have 15/16ths barrels and yes the Track of the Wolf barrels will go right on.

A few issues that ‘occasionally’ occur is the under-rib may hit in the very end of the barrel channel easily solve by removin’ the rib & grind the end down a bit.

Occasionally there will be ‘spring’ when you try to lower barrel into the channel. If this happens loosen the tang screws a couplt turns and re-snug after you get the fit right. At worst it might require to put a bit of beddin’ compound under the tang.

Sometimes when changin’ barrels around on T/C guns the new wedge may be either tight or loose. Again, easily fixed.

And the last thing I can think of is sometimes the hammer will need to be tweaked to properly line up with the nipple.

Not tryin’ to discourage you ‘cause most times they just go right on. Just pointin’ out a few things that ‘can’ happen.

Thanks, folks. I will have to measure my barrel. I assume that means the outer diameter? Iirc the barrel is octagonal? That means measure on the flat surfaces? Currently at work, so can't go look.

Measure from side to side across the muzzle. If it’s a T/C Hawken 50 cal it will be 15/16ths.

Don't have a Track of the Wolf catalog but you might want to check out the sights or lack thereof. When I bought my .40 cal Green mtn barrel for my Hawkin in the early 90's I had to buy sights. I ended up with a set from a Contender pistol.

I have swapped out all my T/C black powder rifles sights to T/C Contender sights, nice improvement.

What is really nice is if you can find T/C Contender Silhouette sights. They have a round numbered dial. Have to mill the base flat to fit an octagon barrel. Match those sights with Lyman globe front sight and you have a nice set up.
