Hello to all,

I am relatively new to this site but not new to muzzle loading. Yes, I've been bitten by the bug. I used to re-enact the Civil War, but now I'm really too old to keep up with the young bucks (am 68 now) so I sold my .58 Enfield musket and bought a 50 cal. Pedersolli flintlock. Over the years I've had to work on the lock a couple of times. I do NOT like the Pedersolli lock. I have heard somewhere that Siler Locks makes a replacement for the Pedersolli lock. Is this true? I figure I'd ask some of the pros on this site to steer me straight on replacing my flintlock's lock. That Pedersolli main spring is something in itself. I broke a mainspring tool trying to get the lock back together. I ended up using my vice grips to compress the mainspring and that is a story of itself. Are Siler locks worth the money? Or should I look at some other lock to replace the Pedersolli lock? Any information would be welcomed. Thanks.

Also, look for a more sturdy mainspring tool. Vise grip pliers don't properly support the arms of the spring and have broken more springs than should have been broken. Yes, I do know of builders who use vise grip pliers as mainspring tools. I cringe when I see them use them.

Yes, I have had my mainspring vises come apart on the upper clamp bracket and I have made a new bracket. I have used machinist clamps as spring vices for the frizzen spring.

The L&R line of RPL (Replacement Locks) would be a source for replacement of your Pedersoli lock.

+1 on the mainspring vise. Just broke a mainspring using vise-grips last week. Yes, I knew better but "it takes less time to take it off with these pliers than it does to get my spring vice". Oh well, $12.95 plus $7.00 to ship. $20.00 lesson.

Looks like I'll have to save up for the RPL lock. Guess it will come in at $190.00 with shipping .

The RPL lock runs a little less in cost than the Frontier flintlock when a replacement is ordered from a Pedersoli distributor, but should function at least 50% if not 100% better. It is not a drop-in lock, and must be fitted, but it's very close.
