Something to consider other than appearance just occurred to me to mention. The grain direction in this stock is less than ideal and the toe plate is there to strengthen it. I would make the plate a little longer than normal if it were me, something like just shy of halfway between the butt plate and end of the trigger guard to reinforce the toe.

Good point, and something I hadn't considered. Thanks!! Was just thinking of the toe plate being there to protect the toe, not to strengthen it. Will see how much material I have to use and how much is needed to meet that spec.

... halfway between the butt plate and end of the trigger guard...
Halfway? No problem!! That's 9 inches and my latest sketch is 4 1/2:

I've got enough material to screw up one and make another. ;)

Nothing wrong with the forum. Don't blame the forum. Just blame me.

IF what you're saying is the forum should censor me from posting this thread, then it should not, because it doesn't violate forum rules. BUT, I've agreed to stop, if the majority of the members wish me to stop, and the poll ends tomorrow.

So don't blame the forum. If you haven't voted, then feel free to blame yourself.
I meant absolutely nothing by my reply I was just making a Funny that’s all ,Please don’t take it to hart I have a warped sense of humor that’s all. Cutting a Toe Plate

The template posted previously was extended by a half inch because I have enough prepped bar stock to make two of those, if need be:

... and taped to the bar stock:

The major cuts were made with a hacksaw:

But now it's time for Mr. Dremel and his quick-change cutting wheel to go to work:
kibler_146.png

Traditionalists be damned; this is a whole lot faster than filing:
kibler_147.png

Even small cutouts can be handled by Mr. Dremel:

There is a place for filing:
kibler_149.png

... though to belabor a point, even some small curves can be Dremelled with the proper bit:
kibler_150.png

But eventually, some judicious filing with proper small files and subsequent sanding produces a piece that I think is ready for inletting:

Yes? No?

Waaaaay to thick.
No, it's not. The difference between my toe plate and the butt plate thickness, as measured by vernier calipers, is at most 0.2 mm. But ... if that's the way it looks to you then maybe I'll have to spend a little more time bringing down that difference. And there's likely to be some rounding of the edges during stock sanding, which will make the edges look thinner. That's kind of why I'm thinking it's OK as is.

Yet More Screwing Around

I want some extra butt plate and toe plate screws. The screws provided are steel 6x1 slotted oval head wood screws. They are not to be found in local hardware and big box home supply stores. They have that particular screw only in brass, stainless and chrome. Brass obviously is out for this rifle. Neither stainless nor chrome will be affected by any bluing or browning process I know of.

I got another of my "ideas" while I was sanding down my steel bar and got a hot bluing effect: why not try heat on the stainless and chrome screws?

So, I set up a little test rig, with stainless on the left and chrome on the right:

... applied heat:

... and after I noted the shanks discoloring, removed heat, cleaned off the soot (maybe not quite well enough with just a Q-tip and denatured alcohol; after all those things were still hot) and gave a light steel wooling:

Yup, definitely a patina-like look achieved. I'm guessing the uneveness could be dealt with by turning the screws while they're being heated.

I also removed them from the test rig and gave them a very brisk and hard steel-wooling to see if that patina was durable, and yes it is, pretty much to the same degree as any other method.

...
Please finish this damn thing so we can get on with our lives.
This is just SO damned funny!! Thanks for the laugh!! 😂

The only one who's forcing you to wait with getting on with your life until this build is finished is you yourself.

...

you can always come back in a year or so and see if it's done by then

...

or WORSE yet ... MAYBE it's ALREADY DONE and I'm just rationing out the pics ...
