Are there any muzzloading pistol kits you can buy for under $200? I know they're highly sought after but I don't want to have to break the bank to get my first muzzleloader.

Are there any lesser known kits that I'm more likely to find or places to search where one might come up besides here? I saw one in the classifieds here that was perfect becauseit was a slightly rusty older kit but already sold.

I think you are limited to what you can find in stock. It's a sellers market.

Single shot Traditions derringer for 209 at Deer Creek Products.

Roughly 250 with all the additional hands in your pocket.

If you want a real pistol a derringer is a terrible idea. my first pistol was a derringer and INMOP they are pretty much useless for anything other than making noise. if you want a pistol make the decision if you want single shot or revolver. If you want single shot go with a great planes, kentucky or trapper and you will have lots of shooting fun with pistols that are both powerfull and accurate.

A derringer is a fine and fun addition to your collection but really should it be a first?

if you just want a derringer as part of a collection but if you want your first pistole to a be an actual fun accurate shooter then a derringer is a terrible idea.

well this is it thus so far. As mentioned in the builders section expect to be creative when dealing with this kit it,s a few days work just to get it to this level to shoot. Lock needs tweaking as well as the trigger assy.. Hammer was off a bit so rather than bend it I notched out the rear of the cup slightly. Taking the lock apart for stoning was easier than getting it back together...moderately difficult getting the spring and guide rod back in. I will go back several times to refine a few things on it. Eventually browning it up when I can find some Birchwood Casey Browning . Probably going to add a brass strap inlay curved up and around the scnabel and one on the top of the grip just to spice it up. Dont know wether I will put the forward escutcheons on.. I kinda like it plain...
Will pop a few caps and just powder today for function until I can get to the range. Still a fun build though....

I just rang a 6 ich steel plate at 47 yards off my back step. rang that sucker with authority. the pistol a .50 cal trapper with 10 inch bbl. Good luck even hitting my oil tank with a derringer much father out than 10ft and you won't have to worry about putting a hole in the tank because it won't penetrate.. heck at the distances that thing is effective at a knife is more effective, quieter , dangerous in more than one direction and you have more than one shot. had Booth used a knife Lincoln would have bled out and the doctors would not have even had a chance to kill him... again its a cute piece for a collection but for your first and only piece its a waste of money.

that is sometimes trying to give good advice to a new shooter...

I agree in buying a used pistol. Sand it down, steel wool off the barrel and start over and its the same thing as a kit but maybe a bit easier as the line up has all been done. Not likely to find any kit at $200.00. Look at all the sites regulary and may find one under $300. IMHO the derringer is NOT worth the cost Looks good and cute but mine regulary bounced a .44 ball off a plywood base and smacked my leg. No penentration and its a belly pistol....dont even need the front bead. Fun for a few times iut. Thats alot of $$ for fun a few times out.

I completely understand Nick,s Point. The Price point on the Derringer is $200. that s why I answered the Post. It could be a good starter point for a newbie just to get into the hobby. Learn some lesson,s in patience and skill,s . I know the Derringer is not a tack driver. Every style of rifle or gun has its purpose. This is just limited to watermelon,s on July 4th.. for fun.
