So finished the second CVA can out well if I say so myself, everything is working and fit is good .Was happy the way it shot last weekend. So how went back to the first and started stock work, took someones advice and worked down the Dremel tool mark, and cleaned and sanded everything with 220 grit. Going to see if I can hide the large crack and bit and fill in another. Found and a assortment of steel flat head screws out of Dixie Gun works 4.99 for 25. So to get them all matching. How thinking about making it a bit darker with stain, its straight grain maple, if I darken it, it will hide that crack. Going to use a mix of BLO, BEES WAX, Turpentine as a finish, any input of finish will be appreciated.

I use this if I want a dark finish or as a touch up. It’s alcohol based.

I make my own dyes & toners using denatured alcohol & aniline dye powders or Trans Tint liquid pigments (like hickory smoke flavoring for wood dyes!) Note: I've done this on quite a few woodworking projects, not gunstocks (yet), but the the principle is the same.

I am going with MinWax Gun stock, its here its no cost, cleaned then sanded, took out must of the dents, scraps, did a little more on repairs, then 220, and wipe it down with Turpentine, then blow it off with the compressor. Let the little bit of glue set up, how 320,blow it out one more time, then stain. Don't want a show girl, but she's got to sling the lead! Left most of the patina that goes with being used and years. Post photos down the trail.

Its coming out nice 4 or 5 coats of the w stock wax should put down a nice finishing coat and a soft finish. It didn't hide the crack! Then wait till the screws get here.
