I appreciate all of the responses, that helps to clear things up. I have had pretty good luck with bore butter up till now. My father passed away recently and my Mom wanted me to have his Cabelas Hawken that my siblings and I gave him for Christmas several years ago. I know that it isn't a fancy custom, but I can still remember the look on his face when opened it up. He had always wanted a blackpowder rifle but could never afford one. I wiped out the barrel and the patch was a little brown. I a sure it had been sitting awhile. After I cleaned it out the bore looked shiny again, but I am sure the lands have been compromised some. I will shoot it to see if the accuracy has fallen off. At least I can buy a replacement barrel if I need to.
Thanks again for the help,
PW
