:idunno: Thx for harty welcome, y'all! This is my 1st post concerning my dueling pistol, which I think may have come thru A. W. Spies. That should be on the lock plate - but I can't quite make it out. "New York" is engraved on the top barrel flat. There are two proof marks concealed on the bottom flat, along with numbers "51". At least one of the proof marks may be a crude Birmingham punch. (?) I plan to show, tell, and ask more about the piece later. But, for now, may I get
some help on Spies - and especially any info on tracing his makers? Thanks!

The book AMERICAN FIREARMS MAKERS by A. Merwyn Carey 1953 says:

"Spies, A. W. 1832-1860. General gunsmith and dealer at Broadway and Fulton Street New York, New York. Became Spies, Kissan & Co. from 1860 to 1876 at same address."
