is there a way to get the vertical lines in a curly maple stock to show up better? i think they're called mineral stains but not sure

I used orange stain before the maple. Makes the stock look like a pumpkin, but you steel wool it almost all the way back. Made the grain pop with my latest project.

I have used water based Cherry stain followed by Vinegaroon and I thought it looked great.

Stan:

First off, they aren't mineral stains. They are caused by the wavy pattern of the grain in the wood.

Any "curly" wood has these waves and they look kinda like the ones in this sketch

Where the wave is cut off by the surface of the stock, it looks and acts like end grain. It is more porous and absorbs the stains better than the grain that is running parallel with the surface.

After the final whiskering and before staining or using aqua fortis apply a lye water solution to greatly increase the contrast between the stripes.
