Throw your gun to the guide and run for help?
When I first read the article my mind wanted to read that he threw his empty gun at the bear.... Impossible to know what really happened in this tragic story. We weren’t there.

A guide never knows what they are getting with their client. Saw a PH in Africa getting very frustrated attempting to teach a couple of clients basic gun handling and how to shoot. They never caught on. Imagine being a guide and having to depend on one of those hunters in tight life or death situation.

Comes down to surface and angle it is hit at.

Might also come down to speed of the lead bullet AND distance. For example, I've shot instead of jacketed ball, 200 grain lead alloy at 1000 fps at solid steel targets, and had them splatter, largest piece is the base which forms a sort of sunburst. Same targets, and a fellow was shooting 147 grains at 900 fps and they tended to bounce. Still off steel armor hit perpendicular, not wood.

a .69 did not get a complete pass thru??? shot a large doe quartering toward me 35 yards. .575 pure lead ball, 110gr of 2f, ball entered the near shoulder breaking it, passed lengthwise thru the deer and broke off side hip bone exiting. she scaled out 125 lbs

I prefer a pass through shot which gives 2 holes to bleed out from.
I prefer my bullet to expend all its energy inside the animal to bring it down quickly. Once the blood is leaking out of the major plumbing, the animal will go down regardless of how many holes. I guess it all hinges on how good a tracker a person might be...

All that said, I've had to search for more than one animal shot with a modern rifle (and a complete pass-through) than with a muzzleloader (and a single hole). All the animals shot with a muzzleloader (and good shot placement, the most critical aspect) were within a few yards of where they were standing when I pulled the trigger.

Worst case scenario for guide and an archery hunter that encountered two bears. Appears they only had one pistol the hunter tossed to the guide, who unfortunately didn’t make it out.

Wonder if bear spray vs the pistol would have made all the difference in the world. I have heard there are few if any fatalities once spray has been deployed?

From the Jackson Hole News & Guide:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department on Monday released new details about the fatal mauling of hunting guide Mark Uptain last weekend, including that bear spray was deployed.

“An investigation found a discharged can of bear spray with the safety off near the body,” Game and Fish officials said in a statement. “It was later determined that the sow (female bear) had been sprayed with bear spray.”
