I had a great day with my buddy Charles today shooting our smoothbores. Charlie shot his original Civil War . 69 caliber Macon (he wins competitions with it!) and I tested out my newly finished long Fowler.
I was able to get a pretty good idea where it was shooting and aligning up the front and rear sights.
It will take more work, but I was able to get a decent group (for me) at 26 yards, off-hand.
I shot the long gun with 90 grains of both 2f and then 3f (which seemed better) and an unpatched round ball of .662 caliber. It was my first go at it, so more experimentation to come.

Outstanding, you have hit one over the fence with this build. Love your work.
Thank you Kevin!
I think the lock could be faster. The main spring is very light (though the lock sparks pretty well). I think if I ask L&R they might send me a stiffer one. It's worth a try asking.

Ya done good with that one.

Remember what Dave and I wrote about the L&R locks. I'd love to have a more powerful main spring in mine but I don't think the tumbler bearing surfaces nor the sear notches would reliably handle the kind of spring power I want (Kibler round face which I have a lot of trouble pulling back with a single thumb and I have very strong hands). Without a lot of power, the lock will not be as fast as it could be, but I'll give it this, after some tuning it works okay and is consistent if not extremely fast.

Put some shot in there like God intended. That's when the fun starts! :thumb:
Indeed! I just got a 25 pound sack of #4's, to go along with the #7.5's and #5's … and I just ordered a clay pigeon launcher for some totally fun practice

Pathfinder, where did you order the clay pigeon launcher from? Thinking of getting one for our annual family summer get together. (And I could use the 'on the wing' practice myself!)

I got it from Amazon/ it was $35 but it got good reviews and the negatives were just 5 percent. It will be here in a couple days.
