For rum balls, I would think that any rum would do.

For good smooth drinking rums:
Baccardi Select is good and readily available
Myers Dark is very good and somewhat available
Appleton comes in various ages and can be good if you like a lighter rum. I like the 12 year Appleton.

I agree - in something like rum balls the flavor of the rum takes back seat to whatever else is in there.
