RIT is for fabric, not decent wood, and the stuff needed for wood isn't all that expensive
 
Used it years ago, but I think they changed the make up of it. Tried it a few years ago and had to sand it off and start over to make it look good. Lots of others that can be used.
 
Some people use it as a base before other stains - I have some but never used it so I don't have any experience with it - try it. Try yellow or orange first then your stain of choice and let us know.:dunno:.
