Sand it down and use spray paint made for bbq systems, on my barrel smoker I made I just use high temp black spray paint.
Throw it in a fire and move it around a bit from time to time. In the fire not fire in it.
Most of the rust will burn off and turn black. I've done this with old cast iron cookware.

What does this have to do with muzzle loaders and black powder?
He's got the question in "Camp and trail gear" so it has nothing to do with muzzleloaders or black powder.
You don't do any reenacting, I take it. The brazier is pretty much a copy of what was used in the 1700's. George Washington had a similar one for when he was "on the road".
I would wire brush it down, build a good fire and paint it with crisco. Season it like a Dutch Oven.

If there is an old time hardware available to you, ask for "stove black" (its made for old cast iron stoves & is not a paint).
If he can't find it there it's available online.
George Washington didn't have black stove paint in a spray can. I imagine he just fired the thing up, or his cook did, and used it which is what I would recommend.
Mine came in just the other day.
I'd simply do as appalichian hunter said above.
Stove black is good, but there are many high temp flat black paints available in rattle cans that work just fine too.
I actually use flat black on the top flat of my rifle barrels,, I remove the sights, mask it off and paint it,, it eliminates any possible glare off the barrel that can happen, giving me a clearer sight picture.

Available at most hardware and big box stores.
Crazy Crow? Let us know how well it stands up to usage........... I have items I bought from them but have always had to do some work on each item, half the items I ordered I sent back for a refund.
