A fellow member asked for my help with his original 1861 Remington. This project has broadened my understanding of the Remington revolver. The replicas we are most familiar with are called a 1858 and this 1861 at a glance might be thought to be that. The model 1861 was made before the type we call the 1858! In the short run of the 1861 a couple of design changes were made that the 1858 used threw out. But that’s not what is the focus of this thread. The front sight of the 1861 is dovetailed into the barrel allowing windage adjustments where as the later 1858 is a post that is fixed. Surely a cost saving but not an improvement in my opinion.
