Does anyone have any information about how the original Colts and Remingtons were machined and what machine tools were used? In other words, I assume the cylinders were turned from bar stock on a lathe, indexed on a drill head to make the chambers, the bolt lugs machined on a mill, etc., etc. but how were the barrels and frames made - forged or machined? Brass grip frames were cast and back straps appear to be forged, along with the rammer levers.
Nowadays, we have CNC machining centers to do it all but I wondered what was done by the old factories.
