OK, file this under "embarassing things I've done muzzleloading."

I was just cleaning my Pedersoli double 12ga, and I took the nipples off and put them in the bucket of hot soapy water. I cleaned the barrels, etc.

Then... I threw the water and the nipples down the drain. :shake:

So... I have some Hot Shot nipples on order from TOTW, but they are on back order. After finishing cleaning, I put the gun back together, but of course it has no nipples. So I lowered the hammers but they are resting on the fences (I think that is the term for the flare of metal that kind of makes a half-moon behind the nipples).

Will it harm the springs or other parts of the lock or the fences to leave it that way for a couple weeks before the new nipples arrive?

I don't have an answer to your question, but I would have taken a wrench to the drain trap and recovered the nipples. I doubt that they went all the way through.

If the nipples are not stainless a magnet might get them out without taking the trap apart.

As much as I may hate to admit it, I did the same thing, except I threw my water out in the back yard. Thanks to short grass and a magnet, I got it back. We all do something like that once in awhile, don't we? I think I do it more than that, actually, but let's talk about something else. :rotf:

Well, at least I'm not the only one! :haha:

They are not stainless, but I've been having problems with misfires and caps falling off, so I figured if it wouldn't hurt anything I'm probably better off without them!

Hopefully my new nipples will come in soon.

it won't harm the fences just sittin on 'em..make sure no bone head dry fire with 'em that way..I would take that trap apart and retrieve those nipples...good excuse to clean the trap

Thanks guys for all the replies! Ya see... I was looking for an excuse to not clean the trap... it's the utility sink in my parents' garage. Scary stuff. :haha: Just kidding.

Well, I got up my courage and took it apart and found my nipples. I'm going to put them back on and check the hammer / nipple alignment. I'm having misfire trouble.

But that is a different thread. http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/201807/

All input is appreciated.

Tamara: Yes, its a dirty job, but one benefit you will quickly notice is how much better the drain works on that sink for months to come. Glad you found the nipples, and can at least explore the alignment with the hammer's face issue.

Use a wire to clear the nipple hole and flash channel before capping the gun and I bet the misfires will drop in number.

Why not just place a piece of leather between the fence and the hammer? That way there will be no chance of the hammer dammaging the fence.

if they went down the toilet bowl,,,i'd ask my wife to go after them or just give it a good flush... :haha: :haha: :haha:
