I am going to purchase a .62 smoothbore barrel for my TC Renegade. I have narrowed it down to a Rice barrel or a Colerain Turkey choke barrel. I like the Rice because I could always use a .62 PRB too. But I like having the choke also. Would like to here from some folks that have experience with these barrels. I need the smooth bore for spring turkey season.

Get the rice for PRB and call Mr Long Beard in just a few yards closer. Trick used some times is a decoy behind you...give you a few yards as he struts in. Works best with a caller behind the decoy :v

Have the Rice barrel jug choked and you can have the best of both worlds. Unfortunately this will cost you another 100 bucks or so.

Some say a jug choked barrel won't shoot a round ball, my barrel choked by Caywood shoots them really well.

I've heard the same - that they shoot PRB quite well. Probably the option I'd go with as well.

Just my two cents buuuut....if you choose the rice you can shoot shot and PRB. If you choose colerain ou can only shoot shot.... You can always play with shot loads..and ways to load them to tighten groups... however you cant make a prb fit down a choked barrel.....its really about what you want most...versatlity..or a dedicated turkey gun?

A jug choke is where you have an expansion chamber bored a couple inches inside the muzzle of your barrel. The shot comes down the barrel, expands into the chamber and is then thrown to the center by outer edge of the chamber making a long, narrow shot string.

A full choke would be around .025 bored out, modified would be .015 or so.

This thread give you an example of the effectiveness of a jug choke using #4 shot at different ranges.

I shoot 100gr of 1F behind my patched round balls and get good accuracy but got very poor accuracy with lighter loads. Sometimes more is better for a smooth bore load, it all depends on the barrel.

Here is a good video on loading and shooting around ball out of a smoothie;

That is the absolute best explanation of a jug choke I have ever seen posted, thank you.......Robin :wink:

More proof a jug choked gun will shoot a round ball. All the holes you see scattered around the cardboard are from loads less than 100gr of 1F shot at 25 yards, calling the group 12" would be generous as there are a lot of holes you can't see in the picture

When I upped my powder to 100 gr the circled group was the result and never changed on subsequent targets if I did my part. I did file the front sight down and knock the back sight to the right later.
