I have a Virginia style flintlock, and I had a sling swivel and button added to it when I bought it. I have decided that I don't like the sling swivel and button on a rifle, and I would like to cover the holes. I figure I'll cover the holes on the forestock with oval inlays, but I'm not sure how to cover the hole behind the trigger guard. Any suggestions?

if the bottom of the stock is flat enough use a long toe plate....i have a book from the library on north carolina guns that show toe plates going from the butt plate to trigger guard :v .............bob

The nicest way to do the one under the butt is to make a little screw-in vent pick to go into an oval or lozenge-shaped inlay. One or two of the Beck or Beyer guns have these.

The front "should" also serve as a barrel pin, so a piece of the screw would stay as a barrel pin. Of course, you'd see a large pin, which may bother you, and then inlay away!

I like the vent pick idea. Do you know where I can see an example?

Also, the sling swivel screw doesn't go through the barrel lug for some reason. There is just a hole through the forestock.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I'll look through my books when I get home. I think there is a gun by Nicholas Beyer in one of the "Accouterments" books...don't know offhand which one.
