Well it has certainly been raked over. The thing about the Kelly story is that it encapsulates so much of that time- from the flint-hard poverty, the persecution of the Irish,the corruption of the constabulary, the lack of justice and compassion of the judiciary ( Redmond Barry being a classic)the resentment of the common people. Don't know of any unarmed policeman shot by Ned Kelly. The police that were killed at Stringy bark creek were all armed.Over 70,000 signatures on a petition to spare Kelly's life from a population of around 300,000 in Victoria at the time tells you something.
