This was at Fall Friendship. Jethro, Jesse and myself had just finished the Widowmaker Big Honking Flintlock Musket match. After 17 shots in the woodswalk we walked up the hill to behind the Block House to shoot some smoothbore paper targets. At the June shoot Jethro shot the winning score on the Widowmaker target. I pulled off a third place overall with this target. I could not see the holes while I was shooting, it was a pleasant surprise. I sure could have used another 10!

Good shooting! I have been shooting a 20ga trade rifle and I can not group like that.

Hey Grizz, I just realized what the title to this topic was...
Ain't that target shot at more like 40 or 50 or something?

Dave, I am not shooting a military load. I am shooting the load Jethro gave me when I picked up my Bess a couple years back.
70 grains FFFG
.715 ball
15 thousands pillow ticking

this is load does not require a short starter.

I think Jethro uses more powder than I do.

Yep, I use 90 grains of 2F. My touch hole is so big 3F squirts right out when I ram the ball down... :idunno:

So much for my hunting, when I take a smoothbore in the woods for deer, I never see a deer closer that 150 yards. When I take a flintlock rifle gun in the woods I see deer at 50 yards. All of my deer have been taken with flintlock rifles. One of these days a deer will step out in front of my Bess at a closer range.

In terms of actual velocity, etc., it probably matches up to the military load of two centuries back...good shooting, by the way, that old bear'd have Excedrin Headache #52!!
