Silly question:
Do BP subs like pyrodex and 777 work any better in matchlocks than flintlocks? Its just that real BP is getting real hard to find now...
 
I think you would face the same problem as flintlocks,ignition reliability with substitutes.
 
The synthetic powders still have a higher ignition temp and could only be used sith a black powder kicker charge. If you have to do that you may as well use the real thing for the whole load.
 
One still might consider doing that if one was doling out his last can of 3fg. It takes only enough black to prime the pan and cover the flash hole in the bore.
