Greetings!

A friend of mine who was trained by NPS told me that if powder is stored in cartridges a chemical reation between the powder and aluminum takes place that can cause the cartridges to spontaneously combust. Has anyone ever heard of that? Has anyone ever heard of that actually happening?

Thats a new one, I've had charges sit for up to a year befor i had a chance to use them up with no problem. But it would nice to know one way or the other. :shocked2: :shocked2:

There should be no aluminum in the cartridges to worry about. I'm certainly no chemist, but in trying to remember my basic chemistry, I can't think of anything that would be reacting enough to generate heat or chemical decomposition like that. Worse thing I can think of is the saltpeter forming aluminum oxide, which is just aluminums form of rust and it makes a boundary layer, ending the reaction anyway. You sure have me curious now though.

I use Al foil also and have many cartridges that have been loaded for several years. I opened one up just to check and no sign of any reaction.

This is in regard to BP. I wonder if some of the subs might cause a reaction?
