Gentlemen, I was fortunate enough to "Johnny Cash" together a Renegade one piece at a time. I've been wanting to redo a T/C Renegade into a Trade Rifle of sorts by reshaping the stock, turning the barrel and adding trade rifle like hardware.
Since the parts were already shortened when I received them a Canoe length rifle was the obvious solution. The Specifications are as follows; Barrel 19 inches & overall length is 34 inches.
The project started a couple years ago with an improperly described barrel that I purchased from another forum, the "like new barrel" was missing about 5 inches of the barrel and the front sight dovetail looked like it was shaped by a mad beaver with ceramic teeth. To get rid of the horrible dovetail, another 2 inches of barrel was removed. While chucked in the lathe, the barrel was turned 1/2 round to give it a new look. The underrib was made from square blank stock in a milling machine, two flats were rounded to allow it to set close enough to the barrel to be soldered to the barrel. Front side was made from flat brass stock folded over and soldered to the barrel.
The stock was properly described and purchased a few months ago from a friend on this forum (among other forums), it was missing a couple inches off the butt plate area, so a similar amount was removed from the front to make it look proportional. Then the stock was reshaped to give it a trade rifle look to the buttstock. The buttplate was made from sheet brass as was the trigger guard. The trigger was made by shaping, heating and hamming a pad in the front.
While the mechanics are finished, I still would like to strip and stain the stock, brown the barrel, age the brass and figure out how to remove the case hardening on the lock so it can be browned too. I have refinished a few stocks and understand how to age brass, but this will be my first time browning anything. I have purchased the Angier book "Firearm Blueing and Browning".
