Hello all. New to the forum and flintlocks. I have a James Klein rifle that belonged to my Dad who has since passed. He built it from a kit approximately 25 years ago.

I’m looking to start load development and ultimately whitetail hunt with it.

I don’t have any information on it other than what I can gather from just looking at the rifle.

I took a measurement of the barrels inner diameter which is .620. I would assume I should use .60 caliber round ball?

I’m looking for any information on starting points (what powder/charge, which round ball, patch size, pre lubed or not).

Thank you for any info or advice!

In your description you call it a rifle but your measurement suggests it's a smoothbore gun. If it's a smoothbore gun I would use a smaller ball with a maybe 0.015" lubed patch. Just my thoughts. I would also buy a few of different diameters lead balls to get an idea what size would work the best in your gun before buying a bunch of lead balls you might not use.

.595 or .600 roundball. .015 to .020 patch. 60 grains 3F. Should be a good place to start working from. Agree with Zug, looks like probably a smoothbore. Good luck.
