I have built just under a dozen guns over the years. I do not consider myself a builder.
More of an assembler or stocker?

I have been looking for plans for a stand to use instead of the shop vise and piece of buffalo hide as a cushion for the wood.
A good friend had such a stand. However he took it with him when he moved to Wyoming a few years ago. So I have nothing to make a pattern off of.
Any help in locating a simple pattern would be greatly appreciated.

A member by the name ‘BJH’ over on the American Longrifles site/forums sells the plans for this gun building free-standing bench.

The pictured bench looks like a lathe bed without the turning parts. That's an interesting idea. There is enough info in the pics one shouldn't need to purchase plans.

There are no official longrifle building bench plans. It's something a guy could cook up for himself. Scroll down a few posts to a work bench discussion for a few photos of benches. Zonnie's idea seems to me a good way to start working out a more complex design.

I searched using Duck Duck Go for Longrifle Building Bench Plans and found amongst the clutter a few informative pictures. I wish I could find an old thread of a few years ago on this same subject. There are good ideas in it, but the bookmark is on a computer giving me fits now.

Here's a neat idea that could be applied to a rifle builders bench.

The splayed legs might look like they'd trip you, but it seems every rifle bench has feet that stick out far enough to do it also. A stringer between the legs could add rigidity. Of course one could blend this idea with others often shown here to come up with something even better.

Coupling a narrow bench like this one with Zonnie's idea for using wooden clamps to hold the work would give a guy lots of flexibility in use.

Vises could be made with less handle projecting if you were willing to build them yourself rather that using readymade hardware.
