Therein lies the rub. One CAN load a tight combination without a starter AND a looser patch doesn't necessarily lead to poorer accuracy (sometimes quite the opposite).

We do have evidence that shows that a short starter is not necessary to achieve adequate accuracy. I have never used one and I can shoot pretty damn good with my flintlock, as can others.
